Situated on the northern side of the Southern Carpathian mountains which form the natural border between Transylvania and Southern Romania, Sibiu was, at one time, the wealthiest of the seven walled citadels built in the twelfth century by the Transylvanian Saxons. It was, in fact, one of the most powerful towns in all of Europe. Known as a fortified city, Sibiu was protected by an imposing city wall which included thirty-nine defensive towers, four gates, and five artillery batteries.

Sibiu was also the home to many firsts. Belonging to Hungary at the time, it was the home to the Kingdom of Hungary’s first hospital in 1292, its first school in 1380, and its first pharmacy in 1494. In 1544, it was also the site of the first book ever printed in the Romanian language, which was printed in cyrillic letters.

Divided into the Lower Town and the Upper Town, visitors to Sibiu will be captivated by its colorful buildings and winding cobblestone streets of the lower town which is still bounded by the old city walls with three of the defense towers still intact. Connected to the Lower Town by the picturesque Passage of Steps, the Upper Town is comprised of three beautiful squares containing shops, cafes, and a number of beautiful churches including the Lutheran Church in Huet Square. This massive Gothic cathedral is a must see for lovers of architecture and boasts some of the best panoramic views of the city.
